Kisses And Caroms Discussion Board: Sound
Bono09 | Wednesday, December 10, 2003 - 09:32 pm So you said a friend did the sound? What did rent in general? Just a microphone? Or did you have a mixer too? I'm worried about getting location sound w/o all the hums and crap. I did a short film and had a boom mic plugged into the XLR and it sounded okay, but I could hear the hum of the air conditions or what have you. what little dialogue there was sounded fine, it's just the mic picks up that and everything else at the same level. So when he opens a door it was very loud you know, which I guess is okay. My question is either I'm being oversensitive in production and I just need a sound designer to come in and fix all this in post or I don't know what I'm doing in production and need more help there. Maybe I need both. Both scare me as sound is even more important than picture. I wonder what Kevin Smith did. I think they just had Scott Moiser working the nagra. Just plugging a good shotgun mic into the XLR and looking at the levels should be good right? I mean I'm tempting to get a sound guy, at the same time, what more can they do? I mean is there something I'm missing besides just plugging it in and making sure the boom is as close as it can be w/o being in the shot and checking levels. Maybe I should trust myself more. When you read posts on how others do it, it always sounds more complicated then it probably was and the worst is when a person like me (who can say they aren't sure) finds a few people who are confident, but might not know any more than I do. They just think they know it. I don't know. It just scares me that's the simple fact. |
Vince (Vince) | Thursday, December 11, 2003 - 04:24 am Get a sound guy! Get someone who can do documentaries, a one man mix/boom person. You need to pay attention to performance, he pays attention to sound and the DP pays attention to picture. If you try to pay attention to all, something WILL suffer. You will get hum and noise no matter what. Make sure to record 1 minute of room tone. Clean it up in post using programs like soundsoap. Re add rome tone. The credits to Clerks say First Crappy Sound Mix = Scott Moiser If you can afford a sound mixer/designer in post get him. But don't skimp on the boom/sound guy on set. |
Bono09 | Thursday, December 11, 2003 - 04:52 pm Do you have clips (or could you get them) of the sound recorded on set, then cleaned up? different stages? that would be cool and informative if you can. Also in general, was the sound you got on set, pretty clean? I mean like you said you will get some hum, but it was pretty decent? If your sound man is on these boards sometimes, maybe he will chime in. |
Vince (Vince) | Thursday, December 11, 2003 - 06:05 pm Joe the sound guy is never here. At least I've never seen him. He spends his online time at Scat porn sites. I haven't gone through full audio cleanup yet, but I do plan to post examples of before and after when I do. Check out soundsoap from bias-inc.com they have examples of what it can do and it's amazing. So far it sound on set is really great. I have a couple probles that will need adr and I'll need to record some more room tone, but otherwise tis good. |
