Crew and Cast (Payment and such)
Kisses And Caroms Discussion Board: Crew and Cast (Payment and such)
Bono09 | Thursday, December 11, 2003 - 09:29 pm Maybe this is in your journals, so forgive me, but after researching it myself, I'm a bit confused about getting cast and crew. Not about how to find them. You get them, you like them and you can't afford to pay them much, if anything. CAST Do they just sign a release that you can use their image for actors? If you aren't paying them, do you just right in some deferred salary if the movie sells? If you want to pay them say $50 bucks a day, can you just give them the money or do you have to deal with taxes? CREW What does the say the sound guy sign? A contract? A release to use their name and anything they do for the production? I just don't understood fully the idea of deferred payment. If your movie doesn't get picked up by Miramax, and you sell DVD's, does that mean every time you sell a DVD you have to right a check to your actor or crew? I want to be fair, but always make my life easy. I guess you can just say if you work on this film you get credit, food, and copy of tape. That's it. When you have no money, I guess that's fair, right? I would like to be able to pay people something ($25 bucks a day just so they don't lose money showing up), but not have to fill out tons of tax forms. You know? I'll be putting my money up front to make the film, so it's all my lose, so hopefully they will understand there's no money to give them. All I can give them is experience and thank you and hope this thing helps all of us. what did you do? Thanks for all the help vince. I hope others are reading this and getting good info. |

Vince (Vince) | Friday, December 12, 2003 - 12:16 am Yes, you will need a release from anyone who is in your movie. You will need the actors SSN and address on the release. You will also need a location agreement signed from any location you use. It's up to you if you want to defer salary. I didn't. You don't have to report wages, unless you pay over $650.00 to a person. Crew people sign Deal Memo's. Yes, if you give your people a cut of the flick and you self distribute then you need to still pay them even if you only sell 3 DVD's. However, I doubt any actor will get a Lawyer and sue you if they don't get their .08 cents. I think credit, food, and copy is fair. Unless you have some other back end deal from Miramax that you're hiding. Paying people is nice, and you should do it. Even if it is only $25.00 a day. "I'll be putting my money up front to make the film, so it's all my lose" BAD attitude. Don't ever say anything like that to your cast/crew. Everyone who works on your film has something to lose. Actors are very venerable, and even if your movie is HUGE they can look bad and not work because of it. Think of all the actors who are type cast. Your DP, Sound, and Gaffer as well as other crew people also have something to lose. Their reps mean something. I paid everyone. No deferred deals. If I were to get some ungodly sum of money, I would find a way of thanking them even more. But that's just me. |
